DIGITAL ONTOLOGY: DEFINING BEING IN THE ERA OF DATA AND ALGORITHMS

Demetrio Ria

Abstract

This contribution proposes an in-depth philosophical inquiry into the nature of reality in the digital age, moving beyond a purely instrumental view of innovation. It argues that digital transformation represents a true ontological redefinition affecting the fundamental structures of human existence and perception.

At the core of this reflection lies the "ontological turn," where the digital shifts from an external set of tools to an existential environment—the infosphere—in which human beings are redefined as informational nodes within a network. Through datification, data rises to a performative ontological substance that actively models reality according to predictive logics. Finally, the epistemological analysis highlights the risks of "algorithmic reason," which replaces causality with statistical correlation, underscoring the urgent need for a philosophy of the digital to reclaim what escapes the measure of the database
