THE INVISIBLE TEACHER: ALGORITHMS, EMOTIONS, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SELF IN DIGITAL CULTURES

Maria Sammarro, Elena Zagari

Abstract

The paper analyzes the relationship between social media, trap culture, and identity construction, focusing on contemporary masculinity. Digital platforms appear to offer freedom of self-expression, yet they are shaped by algorithmic logics that reinforce dominant aesthetic and cultural models (Bocci et al., 2023; Baeza-Yates, 2018). In this context, users become prosumers who actively participate in content production and consumption while remaining influenced by systems that reproduce stereotypes and exclusionary dynamics (Toffler, 1987). Trap culture amplifies these processes by promoting identity models based on power, material success, and control, contributing to a hegemonic masculinity that discourages vulnerability and emotional expression (Connell, 2005). From an ethnopedagogical perspective, the paper highlights the potential of counter-hegemonic practices such as graffiti and street art in fostering more inclusive forms of identity and participation (Gramsci, 2014).
