BEYOND THE APP: A FUNCTIONAL TAXONOMY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOOLS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROMOTION

Mariasole Antonietta Guerriero, Angelo Basta, Fiorenzo Moscatelli, Francesco Paolo Colecchia

Abstract

Physical inactivity represents a major global health concern. This study maps AI-based tools for physical activity promotion using an exploratory functional classification approach. A purposive sample was identified through There's an AI for That and web searches. Six functional categories emerged inductively: adaptive real-time coaching, adaptive workout planning, monitoring and tracking, promotion of daily movement, motivation and engagement, and conversational coaching and behaviour change. The framework provides a conceptual basis for understanding how AI mediates physical activity practices.
