EMBODIED COGNITION

Alessandro Sola, Barbara Zarrillo

Abstract

Embodied cognition challenges traditional cognitive psychology by rejecting the strict separation of mind and body and emphasizing that cognition emerges from the dynamic interaction between brain, body, and environment. This perspective highlights sensory-motor experiences as fundamental to knowledge acquisition and understanding, contrasting with Cartesian dualism’s focus on the brain alone. Drawing on foundational theories from Alva Noë and Andy Clark, embodied cognition reframes cognitive processes as active, situated, and extended beyond the brain into bodily and environmental contexts. This approach offers significant implications for fields such as psychology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, education, and rehabilitation, promoting a more integrated and ecological understanding of cognition.
