VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND EMPATHY THE POTENTIAL OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES
Abstract
Assistive technologies can be considered as mediating tools which promote different ways of accessing relationships and experience. Research on mirror neurons and embodied simulation suggests an understanding of the other rooted in the body. From this perspective, the condition of visual impairment implies further exploration of this process through sensory vicariance, enhancing touch and hearing as channels of access to relationships. In line with these considerations, assistive technologies such as the 3D printer, integrated with the use of software based on artificial intelligence, could translate experience by personalizing the educational relationships through a multisensory approach. Starting from these premises, the contribution proposes a theoretical reflection on learning environments, in which innovation supports relational contact and broadens the pathways of empathic processes.
