MIRROR NEURONS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS FOR SOCIO-EMOTIONAL INCLUSION IN TECHNOLOGY-MEDIATED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

Abstract

Artificial neural networks and mirror neurons represent distinct yet closely interconnected fields, with significant implications for the application of Artificial Intelligence to neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly Autism Spectrum Disorder. This paper explores their relationship by focusing on the role of the mirror system in imitation, emotional regulation, and the development of intersubjectivity. It also examines the use of social robots and augmented reality as technology-mediated experiences that may support these processes in children with ASD, fostering empathy and relational skills. Artificial Intelligence and Affective Computing are discussed as promising approaches for enhancing educational technologies through the integration of cognitive and emotional dimensions. Within this framework, the learning environment itself emerges as an active context of educational mediation, in which space, technology, and interaction jointly contribute to the construction of meaningful experience.
