INDIVIDUALIZED SNOEZELEN ROOM INTERVENTION FOR ADULTS WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER: PRELIMINARY EVIDENCE ON BEHAVIOURAL OUTCOMES AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Mariachiara Feresin

Abstract

Promoting quality of life (QoL) is a key objective of interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Snoezelen Rooms (SR) have been increasingly adopted to support sensory regulation, well-being, and adaptive functioning. This ongoing study examines the effects of a SR intervention on behavioural functioning and QoL in five adults with ASD. Assessments were conducted before and after the intervention using the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Personal Outcomes Scale (POS). Preliminary findings indicate improvements in behavioural regulation, particularly reductions in hyperactivity, stereotyped behaviours, and inappropriate language. QoL outcomes were more heterogeneous, with most participants reporting modestly improved levels of well-being across selected domains. These preliminary results suggest that SR-based interventions may represent a promising person-centred approach for supporting adults with ASD.
