NEED-SUPPORTIVE TEACHING FOR INCLUSIVE MOTOR EDUCATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL: AN INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN FOR THE TFA SOSTEGNO LABORATORY GROUNDED IN SELF-DETERMINATION THEORY
Abstract
The constitutional recognition of the educational and psychophysical value of sport (Article 33 of the Italian Constitution) and the kinesiology reform (Law 86/2019; Legislative Decree 36/2021; Law 234/2021) have redefined the professional space of movement within the Italian educational system. The support teacher, a figure specific to the Italian model of inclusion, remains the daily presider over the inclusive motor experience of pupils with disabilities. The Specialisation Course for Support Teachers (TFA Sostegno) includes a laboratory of Methods and Didactics of Motor and Sport Activities that constitutes, for many trainees, the only structured space of didactic-motor preparation. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017; Ryan et al., 2025) as a theory of motivation and psychological well-being, and on Disability Studies as a critical lens against normalisation (Goodley et al., 2018; Florian, 2019), this theoretical-design contribution proposes an instructional design to be implemented in a 20-hour laboratory for primary school. The constitutional and professional framework engages in dialogue with a theoretical synthesis linking Basic Psychological Needs to a conception of inclusion as transformation rather than normalisation, from which the laboratory architecture in eight modules derives, illustrated through a worked instructional unit and accompanied by an assessment rubric of trainee competencies.
