DETERMINANTS AND REASONS FOR PARTICIPATION AND DROP OUT IN SPORTS ACTIVITIES IN ITALY

Andrea Pisaniello, Alessandro Figus

Abstract

This article aims to represent a systematic literature review on sport participation and dropout in Italy, based on quantitative studies. The research methodology included the collection of data from sources such as ISTAT, EUROBAROMETER, Sport and Health, and the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).

In the research methodology, official data were analysed, using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, such as logistic regression, to identify the factors that influence sports participation and the reasons that lead to abandonment. The research results show that, despite the growing awareness of the importance of physical activity for health, participation in sport remains relatively low in Italy. To improve sports participation in the country, targeted interventions are needed to increase the availability of leisure and sports facilities, and to reduce the costs of sports activities, especially for the most vulnerable sections of the population.
